Mr Gardiner’s address was followed by industry presentations, updates on public procurement from the UK, Denmark and other countries, plus a focus on certification and markets.

Earlier in the day, an update was given on the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Action Plan, including the latest on voluntary partnership agreement negotiations between the EU and Indonesia.

China’s impact on global forest product chains was outlined by Steve Bass of international policy research unit IIED, while legal assurance systems, chain of custody and monitoring were also covered.

The conference was co-ordinated by Chatham House and funded by the Department for International Development.
