The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) is to help establish a body to oversee the delivery of zero carbon homes.

The Calcutt Review has called for the government and housebuilding, construction products and energy supply industries to commission a joint delivery unit to monitor and guide the drive towards zero carbon homes.

Housing minister Yvette Cooper has asked UK-GBC to carry out an initial investigation into the functions and resourcing of the potential body, and chief executive Paul King said the organisation was “uniquely placed to be able to help”.

“The 2016 zero carbon commitment was a watershed moment for green building,” said Mr King. “In a short amount of time it has made a large amount of difference. But to enable the industry to properly gear up to meeting this ambitious target, it is essential that a delviery body is established as soon as possible, to lead and drive the process.”

UK-GBC is to undertake a four-week consultation period with a number of stakeholders and is expected to deliver its results towards the end of the year.
