Figures show that during 2005, timber imports to the UAE from countries such as Malaysia, China, Canada and the US grew by 34% and equated to AED5.2bn.

Flooring imports recorded a 1,345% increase over the 12 months, with softwood lumber imports from the US rising 123% to AED2.4bn.

“We are seeing record amounts of all types of wood related to commodities being used in the construction industry,” said Melanie Beese, exhibition manager at the upcoming Messe Frankfurt Hardware and Tools trade show.

“This need is obviously having a knock-on effect for industries and we are seeing an increased requirement for specialist woodworking machinery and tools for this area.”

Ms Beese added that hardwood, softwood and plywood are key materials growing in popularity in the UAE.
