Two pedestrians died yesterday after a lorry carrying roof trusses shed its load in Hereford.

The driver of the lorry, which belonged to an independent haulage company, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The trusses were manufactured by a timber engineering company in Hereford and were being transported by the haulage company to a customer when the accident happened at 10.30am on Monday near a railway bridge in Belmont Road.

Two pedestrians, aged in their 20s, sustained serious injuries when the lorry shed its load. The man was declared dead on arrival at Hereford County Hospital, while the woman was taken by air ambulance to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she later died.

West Mercia Police is continuing its investigation.
