This was the core theme of a strongly-worded address from Timber Trade Federation president Stephen King to the audience of 340 at its annual dinner in London on March 5.

Mr King highlighted the value of the Wood for Good campaign, which is supported across the timber industry, particularly for its development of its new life cycle analysis database (LCA).

This had been presented the same day at Ecobuild and will be launched at the Green Building Council’s Embodied Carbon Week in April.

“Industry projects like this are the way forward for our fragmented industry, giving us greater strength in debates that affect us all” said Mr King.

He also highlighted the value of the Timber Industry Accord group, which brings together leading bodies to identify areas for collaboration. Such initiatives proved the closer the sector worked together “ the more effective the results”.

“As commercial organisations and trade body members, we should all be questioning the value of belonging to a variety of niche organisations that represent aspects of the industry,” he said.

“Another step along the path is to try to create an umbrella organisation that can truly speak on behalf of the whole industry, much like concrete and steel have done.”
