The meeting, attended by housing minister Yvette Cooper, also involved housebuilders, construction industry suppliers and environmental groups.

Issues discussed included how the housebuilding industry can meet government targets to make all new homes carbon neutral within 10 years, plus the recently unveiled Code for Sustainable Homes.

TTF chief executive John White described the summit as a very good quality strategic event.

But he said he was concerned about the new code’s emphasis on performance of homes once built, at the expense of the attributes of materials, such as timber, used in their construction.

“The Home Builders Federation’s executive chairman Stewart Baseley shares my view that the environment is the most important issue facing all industry sectors at the moment, particularly construction,” said Mr White.
