Timber Trade Federation (TTF) members have discussed legal and sustainable timber sourcing issues with the Department for International Development‘s (DFID) forestry adviser John Hudson.

About 12 members met Mr Hudson to discuss certification, illegal logging, the government’s procurement policy, the EU Action Plan on Illegal Logging and the need to avoid discriminating against tropical timber sources in developing countries.

They will have a further chance to air their views during a meeting with DFID minister Hilary Benn on October 6. The visit, the fourth time the industry has met Mr Benn, will enable the trade to put forward its views prior to him attending the African Law Enforcement and Governance Conference in Cameroon on October 13-16.

TTF head of public affairs Mark O’Brien said: “DFID recognises the importance forestry plays in the economies of many developing countries and they are deighted with the work we are involved in, particularly in Indonesia.”
