Trus Joist‘s Parallam parallel strand lumber has been used to convert an old dye house into a private luxury home.

The building, called the Thunder House, now features Parallam ridge and hip beams, which the owners have left visible because they like the look of the material. It has also been used for the floor structure, which includes a glass section as a decorative feature.

The Parallam was supplied by Trus Joist master dealer Howarth Timber Engineering and the latter’s general manager said the Thunder House order highlighted a growing trend towards using the engineered wood product as an integral design feature in a building.

“The dye house is an unusual application for Parallam, but we are noticing a trend towards using the material in other, similar ways, especially where designers are looking for a construction material that combines superior technical performance with a special aesthetic appeal.”
