A unified system for grading structural lumber among the world’s tropical timber-producing areas is believed to be a first.

The system is the result of a research project at the Los Baños-based Department of Science and Technology – Forest Products Research and Development Institute.

The research was funded by the International Tropical Timber Organisation. DOST under-secretary Florentino O Tesoro said: “We applaud this development as we realise how critical a harmonised lumber rating method among countries of south east Asia, Africa and South America is to national and international trade.”
