The mill, part of the Aylesford site and once the company’s south-east headquarters, was considered too small, a spokesperson said. The branch and offices will continue to trade.

Twenty jobs are at risk and a consultation process has begun, the company said.

The mill, which is supplied from the port at Rochester, produces all types of timber products for Travis Perkins. Production will be increased at King’s Lynn, which is supplied through east coast ports, and Ferndown, on the south coast, near Bournemouth. Work will continue at Cardiff.

A spokesperson said: “We had a strategic review of our UK timber processing and distribution network and this is now being put into action. Aylesford was not big enough for the level of investment that we need to make.

“There is increased demand and we need to upgrade the facilities.”

Human resources director Carol Kavanagh said: “We are saddened to announce the closure of the Aylesford timber mill, which has provided a quality service to our company over a number of years.”
