Travis Perkins is on track to achieving its five-year target of pushing its share of the UK builders merchant market from 13% to 20%.

This year alone the company has added 20 branches to its national network, bringing the total to 522 at the end of April.

The acquisitions bring around £19m turnover on an annualised basis, although the group is not prepared to say how much it has spent achieving this growth.

Travis Perkins has become adept at picking off its main targets – smaller independent businesses that can plug gaps in the company’s nationwide coverage.

The largest recent acquisition took place on March 27 when six branches were bought from Joseph Spark & Son. Located at Urmston near Manchester, Broadheath, Altrincham, Lymm near Macclesfield, Glossop and Knutsford, these outlets have a combined turnover of £6.5m and have all been re-branded Travis Perkins.

The purchasing programme also includes four greenfield openings. Other acquisitions this year have included two branches at Newquay and St Ives from Quality Building Supplies; Bourton Building Supplies, a single branch business at Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds; and Buywell Building Supplies in South Shields.

The most recent acquisition, on May 24, was a site and certain assets at Canvey Island for conversion to an all-purpose branch business which will have a strong timber bias.

Timber products account for 22% of Travis Perkins’ total sales turnover.
