Travis Perkins has broken the 700-branch barrier following the acquisition of 135-year-old timber specialist WH Laver & Sons.

The group has already embarked on a £350,000 refurbishment programme at WH Laver’s two-acre site in Hemel Hempstead, including investment in sheet and milling facilities and improved stock profiles to bring the business in line with other Travis Perkins specialist timber branches.

About £150,000 is being spent on moulding equipment, a band re-saw and a new timber shed.

It also plans to introduce a range of heavyside products to the business, which has changed its name to Travis Perkins.

Chief executive Frank McKay, said: “The acquisition of WH Laver is another welcome addition to strengthen our branch network, consistent with our established strategy of investing in growth opportunities within our chosen areas of specialisation.”

He welcomed the 26 WH Laver staff to the group, saying their extensive experience in the timber market made them a valuable asset.
