The UK timber industry needs to grasp the opportunity to deliver a sustainable product and grow the market for wood, the Timber Trade Federation‘s (TTF) annual dinner heard.

TTF president John Tong, speaking to an audience of 374 members and their guests at London’s Hilton Hotel, said the environment gave the trade an opportunity it “just had to take”.

Mr Tong said a key trade priority in the coming months must be establishing alternative funds to promote wood, as current funding arrangements of wood. for good comes to an end.

He added: “It is absolutely vital that substantial generic promotion continues at a time when our competitors are pouring millions of pounds into promoting their materials.”

Mr Tong urged members to adopt the TTF’s Responsible Purchasing Policy as an example of industry good practice.

He said the TTF is working with other European federations to tackle illegal logging, which “undermines the reputation and, in turn, profitability of legitimate trade everywhere”.

Mr Tong also said the TTF has enjoyed a successful and financially healthy year and its political influence is as strong as ever with its engagement with the government, EU and G8.

The TTF will publish a joint statement, with four other related trade associations, promoting timber’s environmental case in time for the forthcoming election.

New TTF chief executive John White told members that it was a “hugely exciting time” for the industry and federation, with wood sales expected to expand further with the growth in construction and increasing demand for timber frame.

Mr White said the TTF would promote the industry’s environmental credentials “mercilessly” as it develops its political campaigning.
