TRADA Technology Ltd is publishing an updated wood information sheet to help clear up trade confusion about issues such as specifying plywood for external applications and CE marking of wood-based products.

Ian Rochester, TRADA Technology’s product certification technical consultant, said confusion about the suitability of certain types of plywood for external use was a “very important” issue in the trade.

He said: “There are new rules and it’s a question of people getting their heads round it. It takes time to filter through.”

Mr Rochester will also travel to Brussels on March 30 for a gathering of notified bodies (certifiers). The agenda is likely to include plywood for external conditions in accordance with EN636-3, in particular species, durability and how notified bodies are to consider these issues.

Meanwhile, Timber Trade Federation product manager Nick Boulton plans to write to Brussels asking for clarification on the issue.
