TRADA International is seeking to use its building skills to help in the Pakistan earthquake relief effort.

The organisation, which has designed an earthquake-proof timber construction system, is identifying which aid agencies to work with to help rebuilding in the worst affected areas.

TRADA International is already working with the Eden Project on a post-tsunami regeneration initiative, Project SriBuild, which will rebuild homes and create new livelihoods in Sri Lanka.

Paul Follett, of TRADA International, said with a little adaptation the project could fit well into the Pakistan relief effort.

Last year the organisation’s bamboo-based building system withstood a series of full-scale earthquake resistance tests in India, at a level equal to the quake in Pakistan.

Mr Follett was interviewed by BBC 2’s Newsnight programme following the disaster, and footage was shown of TRADA’s building system being tested.

He said: “The main problem is that these buildings were predominantly masonry-built, so were extremely heavy, not least the roofs.

“Many of the buildings were poorly constructed, so they would have simply collapsed, killing and injuring the children and adults inside.”
