TRADA Technology is undertaking research to develop a single treatment process for the vacuum impregnation of wood primers and preservatives.

The “PRIME” project is being carried out in conjunction with European commercial and research partners and with support from the European Commission’s Quality of Life programme.

Traditionally, wood joinery is pre-treated and preservative primed in separate operations, incurring both a time and cost penalty.

Project manager Peter Kaczmar said: “The objective is to make wood joinery in Europe more competitive by improving its stability and durability through a new treatment process that will add value while minimising cost.”

TRADA Technology’s partners in the research include the TRADA, Commission of the European Communities, SHR in Denmark, VTT in Finland, Oxford Brookes University and Arch Timber Protection.
