A warning that trussed rafter roofs should never be converted without expert advice has been issued by the Trussed Rafter Association (TRA).

It has produced a new product data sheet specifically to warn householders of the perils of modifying trussed rafter roofs in order to provide roof space accommodation without first seeking experienced, professional advice.

The association said that nearly one third of all new properties now incorporate roof space accommodation, causing some owners of existing older properties to aspire to the same.

However, said the TRA, existing trussed rafters may not be suitable for conversion – and even if they are, they should never be cut or modified without expert advice from an engineer or architect being sought.
