Leading figures from Australia’s tree planting industry headed to Melbourne for the meeting that aimed to establish a framework that would be centred on “experienced and reputable companies that know how to grow trees”.

TPA claims that this will allow those investing in offsetting schemes to guarantee that their efforts will be accredited by future emissions trading initiatives and make a genuine commitment to tackling climate change.

“The industry with the proven ‘know-how’ of growing trees would be the most appropriate organisation for developing the accreditation scheme,” said TPA chief executive officer Allan Hansard.

“These carbon offset opportunities are available here and now, unlike new technologies to reduce emissions which are many years away.”

Car manufacturers and energy companies are likely to invest in the accredited plantations as part of their efforts to offset their carbon emissions.
