About 50 members of the legislative assembly (MLA) in Orissa, India, are demanding tough action to deal with deforestation in the state caused by forest mafia.

The MLAs say continued illegal logging could strip the forests of all trees within five years.

Their recommendations to the state chief minister include a new law to tackle forest mafia, the creation of special courts, additional powers for forest officials, compulsory retirement for corrupt officials and privatisation of plantations.
