The Scottish branch of timber frame manufacturer Torwood has been bought by Tradestyle Cabinets Ltd, a Glasgow-based independent kitchen manufacturer, for an undisclosed sum.

Tradestyle group managing director Terry Hamilton had been looking to buy a timber frame manufacturer for two to three years. He said there were synergies between the two businesses and that he was very confident about the future.

The two Torwood factories – one in Livingston and the other in Ipswich – went into receivership in April last year. The Ipswich factory was closed, but the receivers continued to trade the Livingston factory until December, prior to its January acquisition by Tradestyle.

The 60,000ft2 Livingston factory, to be renamed Torwood Timber Systems, has the capacity to produce up to 1,500 units a year and initially it will concentrate on the Scottish and northern English markets.

Torwood’s managing director Graham Reid said: “This is an excellent time to be launching a timber frame manufacturer when demand for housing is high and timber frame is taking an increasing share of the market throughout the UK and most particularly in England.”
