The organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have been accused of falling short on the use of sustainably sourced timber.

The claim comes from seven eNGOs, including Rainforest Action Network (RAN) who says the organisers are failing to end the use of timber associated with rainforest destruction and human rights abuses.

The Games’ organisers announced amendments to their timber sourcing policy in January but the eNGOs remain dissatisfied, despite the fact that its feedback was incorporated into the revised code.

The organisers’ code states that they will only use “raw materials collected or cultivated in consideration of resource conservation including the perspective of mitigating deforestation and forest degradation”.
