Historic Tonbridge Castle is having its gatehouse roof repaired with oak beams supplied by Timbmet.

The company won the contract from English Heritage and restoration contractor Quadric.

Each piece of timber delivered to the Kent castle, which dates from the Norman times, is tagged by Timbmet so specifiers can trace the log batch from which it originated and thus check its environmental credentials.

Meanwhile, five of the company’s staff have been trained by the Building Research Establishment in visual strength grading to the requirements of BS 5756. Timbmet says it now has more qualified visual strength grading staff than any other comparable UK company.
