Timbmet has used its extensive African contacts to help an artist source tropical tree stumps for use in a Trafalgar Square exhibition about deforestation.

The Oxford-based hardwood specialist acted as a facilitator for artist Angela Palmer to source stumps in Ghana.

Several stumps, from trees that fell through natural causes, were sourced from Ghanaian timber producer John Bitar, including the denya and essa species.

Green laser beams will shine upwards from the stumps to mark the height the trees may have reached while alive – about 169ft, the same height as Nelson’s Column.

Ghana, which last year became the first country to sign a Voluntary Partnership Agreement with the EU to cut out illegal timber exports to Europe, is supporting the aims of the exhibition.

Ms Palmer has been to the country three times as part of the research.

The exhibition will take place on November 16-22.
