TIMBERWeb’s new e-market place for sustainable timber is claimed to be attracting a high level of interest.

The service – launched on July 1 in conjunction with the Forest Stewardship Council – has attracted 1.8 million hits from 17,681 individuals, who have all requested information on sustainable timber or placed an order via the site.

Some 50 of the 600 com-panies that use Timberweb are able to supply certified timber to internet purchasers.

Since its launch in 1997 the TIMBERWeb site has handled 1.5 million hits a month from 20,000 businesses. Companies registered for e-buying and selling, which was introduced to the site in October 2000, total 1,200.

TIMBERWeb is unable to disclose the total volume of timber sold through the site.
