Two window replacement schemes have shared the inaugural British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Project of the Year award, presented at the organisation’s annual dinner.
Mumford & Wood’s project on St Vincent Street, Glasgow and Timber Windows Ltd’s work on an “unusual arts and crafts house” shared the award, with each project highly commended.
The awards are designed to recognise “up and coming talent and innovation in the UK woodworking industry”, according to BWF president Pauline Kelly. As well as Project of the Year, the BWF named an Apprentice of the Year, which went to Ryan Cassidy of Westfield-based Woodbase Joiners Ltd.
“[Ryan] has exceptional talent and has all the attributes required to make him an outstanding craftsman,” said Simon Bartlett of Woodbase Joiners, who nominated Mr Cassidy for the award.
Of the Mumford & Wood project, the judges said it was a “substantial and prominent project which realised a demanding brief based on the need to achieve targets for reduced energy consumption and to meet BREEAM assessment”. Spalding-based Timber Windows was praised for overcoming “technical and logistical challenges” in the installation of windows.
BWF chief executive Richard Lambert said the awards were a welcome addition to the annual dinner and would “celebrate our industry and the people who work in it”.
