Hundreds of planks believed to be from the sunken cargo ship Ice Prince have washed onto beaches at Eastbourne following last week’s storms.

“We are working closely with the contractors and Natural England to arrange for the timber to be removed from our beaches,” said councillor Steve Wallis.

“We are keen to reduce the impact of the timber on the beaches and natural environment, and to ensure that removal is by the best possible means.”

The wood was washed onto half a dozen beaches at Holywell. It will be collected after Easter and then chipped into biomass.

Around 2,000 tonnes of timber deck cargo was shed by the Ice Prince before it sank in the English Channel in January. The majority beached between Worthing and Brighton.
