The impact of timber lorries on rural roads in Dumfries and Galloway will be greatly reduced with the launch of an ‘agreed routes map’ for the region.
The map shows which roads can be used without restrictions or conditions, those which are subject to restrictions or conditions and those which are out of bounds.
Dumfries and Galloway council, hauliers, forest owners and others who have worked on the map for two years have been congratulated by Scottissh Forestry Minister Allan Wilson.
He said: “It is vital that all parties with an interest in timber transport work together to develop innovative, cost-effective local solutions to minimise and manage the impacts of timber transport.”
The Scottish Executive also supports the development of other solutions such as sea and rail routes, lorry routes that avoid public roads and the integration of councils’ road maintenance and improvement programmes with forest owners’ harvesting schedules.
