The timber sector is strongly represented in a cross-industry consortium which will examine how construction product manufacturers can make more efficient use of materials and cut down waste.
The DTI-funded Be Aware project (Built Environment Action on Waste Awareness and Resource Efficiency) will investigate around 40 products, including their design, manufacture, installation, use and eventual disposal.
The Wood Panel Industries Federation, British Woodworking Federation and UK Forest Products Association are represented on the consortium led by the Construction Products Association and managed by BRE.
BRE believes the 30-month project, which will be officially launched at the Building Centre, London on January 30, will demonstrate how industry can make savings of up to 25% by reducing waste and improving resource efficiency.
Be Aware, which will include a series of workshops, is also intended to find other uses for waste created at each stage of a product’s life cycle.
