Timber featured strongly in the five projects shortlisted for the Master Builder of the Year 2000.

The award, sponsored by the Federation of Master Builders and Jewson, was won by Ken Farnham of Devon. Guests at a ceremony in London on Tuesday heard he had renovated a derelict 18th century country house where several other companies had failed, leading his client to nominate him for the building industry’s highest accolade.

Building Excellence Awards were presented to the following: Mark Galloway of MG Construction, Co Down who built a new home in Ireland featuring timber windows; Ian Keele of Liddiards, Marlborough who built a permanent timber canopy over a Grade I listed Roman mosaic at Hungerford; Domenico and Rafael Colella of Goodwick who restored a traditional cottage in Wales using reclaimed materials – including beams from shipwrecks – and techniques not seen for 50 years.

Alistair Laurie of Laurie Construction, Sandford was presented with the Special Mention Award for the design and construction of 42 timber kit homes in Scotland.
