French elm, Australian walnut, birch ply and teak have all been restored to their original condition, with the Southbank Centre noting that many of the existing materials have been reused after the £111m facelift by Allies and Morrison.

And where new wood has had to be brought in, it has been sourced from renewable forests and carefully chosen to fit in with the new look for the famous venue, according to the Southbank Centre.

This has included a new roof above the stage, supplied by Medite and Taylor Made Joinery, and the use of wooden flooring to replace carpets between the seats in order to improve the acoustic performance of the hall.

Of the hundreds of contractors and subcontractors involved in the project, Brown and Carroll Ltd were employed to undertake joinery work and Victorian Woodworks Contracts supplied the timber flooring.
