The renaissance of timber in British architecture was a recurring theme among presenters at the Stirling Prize ceremony in Gateshead.

Held at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, the Stirling Prize went to Gateshead’s Millennium Bridge just next door.

However, there were many examples of the use of wood in buildings – both on the Stirling shortlist and in other categories.

For the first time the event was sponsored by the American Hardwood Export Council and its guests included Timber Trade Federation president Geoff Rhodes, director of the BRE‘s Centre for Timber Technology and Construction Dr Peter Bonfield, and Peter Kurz, the US minister counsellor for agriculture based in London.
