The benefits of prefabricated timber frame homes came highly commended in a two-page spread in the Sunday Telegraph.
The article, which appeared in the paper’s House & Home section on February 6, was headlined “Prefabulous” and “Bye-bye bricks and mortar”.
It featured interviews with a timber frame home owner in the Outer Hebrides, a designer of 40 Douglas fir framed homes in Shropshire and a developer who chose the Huf-Haus system for new flats in Richmond.
Readers were told that timber frame homes have better insulation and are quicker to build than masonry ones.
However, the article said English homebuyers are not yet convinced of the benefits, quoting a 2002 Mori poll which showed 90% of respondents would prefer to buy a masonry house.
Designer Bob Tomlinson said people live in brick and block homes because the construction skills base overwhelmingly favours cement.
