In its report on UK timber and joinery market development, MBD predicts the market for builders’ carpentry and joinery will grow by 6% between 2006-2011, driven by the added-value sector, while price pressure in the commodity sector is expected to continue to dampen growth prospects.

But it is the market for timber framed housing where MBD forecasts strong growth potential. “Timber-based construction is expected to benefit from the build up to the 2012 Olympic Games, providing a sizeable opportunity for builder’s joinery and carpentry to gain market share at the expense of less modern methods of construction,” states MBD.

Other areas of growth are likely to include decking materials and laminate flooring, while the market for wooden furniture remains the largest sector in the timber products market, and will account for around 56% of the total timber products market in 2011.
