A development in Rochdale featuring timber frame housing by Oregon Timber Frame has been shortlisted for a CABE Building for Life Award.

The £3.8m Trafalgar Street project, designed by OMI Architects, has already won a RIBA Housing Design Award.

Oregon used a platform timber frame structure comprising open wall panels with floor cassettes formed in engineered I-joists and a timber truss roof. The foundation were mini piles with ground beams. The ground floor slab was beam and block, with a concrete screed over.

The development was designed for mixed tenure, with some houses being made available for sale while some were for social rent.

The main group of houses consists of large 4-bed houses that sit back-to-back with smaller 3-bed houses, and has been designed so that the 3 and 4 bed units can be combined easily to form one 7-bed unit.
