Key changes have been made to British Standards in relation to timber frame and timber engineering.

The recently released BS 5268 Part 6.1 now reflects the design procedures for building timber frame buildings up to seven storeys. Previously the code limit was four storeys.

In addition, the imminent revision to BS 5268 Part 2 will include guidance on disproportionate collapse design procedures.

The changes in both codes also reflect the design approach that will be required by the Eurocodes for timber, currently scheduled for full UK implementation in spring 2010.

Timber frame engineers and checking authorities will need to make additional calculations and reviews are needed to comply with the new code changes.
