Zambia’s timber industry is being exploited by foreign cartels, according to the permanent secretary for the country’s Western Province.

Maswabi Maimbolwa said foreign dealers find it easy to exploit the province and nation in timber pricing because forests are not certified. He said the country was forced to export logs because local dealers do not have processing capacity.

Provincial deputy minister Simasiku Namakando has called on the WWF and the US government to help Zambia certifty and manage its forests.
