More than 40 timber companies responded to the Olympic Delivery Authority’s (ODA) invitation for suppliers to pitch for places on its Timber Supplier Panel before the April 7 deadline.

Last month the ODA started its search for “up to 20” suppliers to provide sustainable timber for the London 2012 Games construction project, stating that only fully legal and sustainable certified timber would be used and “rigorous” checks employed to ensure compliance.

An ODA spokespserson described the response as “very strong”, but added that no company names would be released at this stage.

“We have to review all the people who have enquired, to check they are compliant.”

The ODA is expected to announce which companies have successfully made it onto the panel in July.

An estimated 600,000m² of hardwood, softwood plywood and other products, as well as 40,000m³ of softwood, will be needed by the ODA’s contractors and their suppliers.
