The timber industry Olympic campaign Wood for Gold has pitched to fuel the London Olympics flame with biomass from waste wood created by the Games construction site.

The idea was presented to the Olympics minister Tessa Jowell at a meeting on Monday also attended by the Olympic Delivery Authority’s (ODA) leader of construction products Peter Bonfield and the ODA head of sustainable development and regeneration Dan Epstein.

It is believed the plan would involve wood gasification to fuel the flame for the torch and the flame at the Olympic stadium.

Ms Jowell also agreed at the meeting to speak at TRADA’s In Touch with Timber conference next year, as well as hold six-monthly meetings with the Wood for Gold team.
