For the first time forestry management company Tilhill has included details of its corporate sustainability activities alongside its annual report.

Managing director Matthew Rivers said: “It is entirely consistent with our parent company values that we should seek to embark on corporate responsibility reporting for the whole business.

“We believe this to be an exceptional initiative for a company of this size: many larger businesses don’t collate, consider and then publish their performance in this area of their work.”

The role forests and timber can play in a sustainable economy was highlighted at the summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg last year.

Tilhill, a subsidiary of UPM-Kymmene, has contributed to the development of the Sector Sustainability Strategy and, as the UK’s “leader for tree solutions” has a role to play in the partnerships which will help deliver this strategy.

Its Corporate Sustainability Report includes sections on the company as an employer; its environmental management responsibilities; greenhouse gas emissions; health and safety management; working with contractors; responsible land use; charitable conditions; and forest certification.
