The government has given permission for a £250m biomass and waste-fuelled power station to be built at Tilbury Docks.

Tilbury Green Power Ltd plans to import 90% of the biomass – wood chips – from Europe and the US, with the UK then becoming the main supplier in three to five years’ time.

The plant is to be built on a derelict site formerly used for glucose and starch manufacture.

Some 60MW of electricity will be generated, with 120 new jobs created at the facility.

Tilbury Green Power is part of Express Energy, which is developing biomass-fired electricity generation projects where each plant is designed to operate using fuel which receives renewables obligation certificates accreditation.
