Thermowood from Finnforest has been used to build a canopy in a Green Flag Award-winning nature reserve in Highbury, London.

Thermowood was chosen for the hyperbolic paraboloid structure in Gillespie Park Nature Reserve instead of air-dried European oak due to its lower cost, while still offering durability credentials.

Cowley Timberwork installed and created the final constructional detailing of the canopy, with Built Engineers developing the original design.

“The way in which Thermowood is manufactured makes it less susceptible to secondary stresses, ensuring the timber will be stabilised against movement caused as a result of weather conditions,” said Gordon Cowley, managing director of Cowley Timberwork.

Finnforest’s Thermowood uses Finnish redwood which is steam treated at over 200ºC to produce a more stable timber product.
