Timber frame has gained the edge on brick and steel in a £2.7m school development in Sunderland.
A timber frame building designed by Blythe-based Timber Frame Solutions (TFS) is currently being erected to replace the 100-year old Grangetown Primary School.
The original brick/block and steel frame design was viewed as too expensive and slow to construct, so architects chose timber frame to provide “sustainability, energy efficiency, fast-build time and minimal waste”.
TFS is using its new Panel Therm system in construction to boost building performance.
The new school, to be opened in the autumn, will feature expanded community facilities including a large hall, creche, ICT suite and parents room.
It is being funded by the department for education and skills, Sunderland LEA and the New Deal for Communities. Costs have been reduced by local companies and organisations providing skills and raw materials.
