A glulam frame is at the heart of a new Manchester supermarket which Tesco claims is the UK’s most energy efficient store.

The 52,000ft² Cheetham Hill outlet, which opened on January 12, has been developed as part of Tesco’s Climate Change Programme and is one of a number of eco-stores opend by the chain.

Tesco said using a timber frame instead of metal significantly reduced the store’s embodied carbon footprint, while rooflights allowed more natural daylight into the store, saving on electricity.

The store also features signs made out of cardboard instead of plastic.

Other Tesco eco-stores featuring glulam include Shrewsbury and Wick.
