A new non-toxic timber treatment has been unveiled at the annual conference of the International Research Group on Wood Preservation in Brisbane.

The TimberTreat anti-termite preservative, developed by Queensland company Cooee Biosciences, is potentially “a very important development”, according to Dr John French, a leading termite expert who presented preliminary field trial results to the conference.

Mr French said wood blocks treated with an anti-microbial solution and one coat of TimberTreat were placed into containers and inserted into active above-ground termite colonies for between 28-45 days. He said the results showed a strong anti-feeding reaction by the termites.
