IKEA subsidiary Swedwood is investigating setting up a sawmill in Russia’s Sverdlovsk region.

The region is already working in partnership with companies from Germany and Italy and is in discussion with representatives from Dutch and Chinese firms.

Logging in the region is set to rise to 18.5 million m3 per year and IKEA plans to invest US$140m in Russia’s timber processing and furniture industry.

The proposals will be discussed further in October when the Sverdlovsk region plans to hold a ‘Sweden Days’ event in the hope of attracting further investment to the area.
