A competition to design a three-storey townhouse of the future using sustainable construction techniques and materials has been launched by David Wilson Homes in conjunction with wood. for good.

The “eScape” design challenge, managed by Design for Homes, is looking for innovative solutions which address the need for higher densities while meeting consumer, construction and environmental demands.

Entries must meet the Building Regulations’ updated Part E requirements for sound transmission; EcoHomes criteria endorsing sustainable construction; and modern methods of building based on developing more homes with fewer craftspeople.

Up to four entrants will be shortlisted for the second stage, with £6,000 paid to each for developing their designs further. Judges will include interior designer Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen, wood. for good managing director Charles Trevor and David Birkbeck, chief executive of Design for Homes.

National housebuilder David Wilson Homes has agreed to use the winning designs to build at least 12 homes on one of its developments in the south-east.
