Scottish timber traders were urged to learn the lessons of procurement for the 2012 London Olympic if they are to cash in on the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Speaking at the Scottish Timber Trade Association (STTA) annual meeting in Grangemouth, BM TRADA Certification timber business manager Alasdair McGregor said the lessons in the supply of wood for London may well influence procurement for Glasgow.

He also urged members to raise awareness of chain of custody certification to its customers in view of the increasing awareness of green issues.

“There is still some confusion in the construction industry and its related professions about certification and chain of custody. The approach of ensuring legal and sustainable sourcing via approved forest certification schemes should be more actively promoted and encouraged.”

STTA secretary David Sulman added: “Many STTA member companies have invested in chain of custody certification, but demand for certified wood and wood products has been disappointingly low from some market sectors. However, there are signs this is beginning to change.”
