The performance of OSB, structural use of timber and a city centre kindergarten timber design were the winning projects in the Scottish Timber Trade Association’s (STTA) sponsored student prizes at Napier University.
Sylwia Makowska won the best timber-related honours dissertation project for her OSB study, which is now being prepared as a conference paper.
Alastair Morrison’s module came top in the “Properties and structural use of timber” category, while most innovative use of timber in a design project was awarded to Stefan Zifcat for his city centre kindergarten.
STTA president Russell Paterson said the prizes represented a good spread of subjects, encompassing materials, design and engineering.
“Against this background, it is a very encouraging to see that the unique qualities of wood and wood products are being recognised by an increasingly wide range of specifiers and users,” he said.
All winners are currently students at Edinburgh Napier University’s Centre for Timber Engineering. A fourth prize will be awarded later this year.
