Jouko Karvinen, who started in the role of CEO at the end of March, has stated that higher Russian export duties, environmental pressures and the use of wood as a biofuel are all impacting on the forest products industry.
“A reality for Stora Enso and the European forest products industry is the worsening shortage of wood supply resulting from announced higher Russian export duties, the increasing use of wood fibre as biofuel and the rising environmental pressures to limit the procurement of wood raw material,” said Mr Karvinen.
However, Mr Karvinen has stated that Stora Enso is “fast-tracking efforts to find alternative sources of wood” in order to prevent the curtailment of production at the firm’s mills due to a shortage of raw materials.
