Stewart Milne Timber Systems says it has secured the UK’s largest single timber frame order – a 500-home development for Bellway Homes in East London.

The company, whose English factory is based in Witney, said the £6m order underpins the “progressive” and growing acceptance of timber frame construction.

The homes, consisting of two- and three-storey homes and apartments, will be built on an old oil refinery site in Stepney and are expected to be completed in 12-18 months’ time.

Bellway spokesperson Julian Kenyon said: “Timber frame construction has advanced to new levels in terms of technology and environmental consideration, and the amount of off-site production reduces exposure to construction delays. The progress at Stepney could be our business template for the future.”

Christine Jones, Stewart Milne Timber Systems’ director of sales and marketing, said: “Apart from being the largest order for timber frame in the UK it was also the largest [timber frame order] for key worker accommodation.”

She said Stewart Milne had collaborated on the project since Bellway secured the site in 1997.

The project will require huge logistical planning, with up to 12 lorries delivering home components on every day of construction.

All homes have been purchased by East Thames Housing Association and NewLon Housing Trust, who will offer units for rent and for shared ownership purchase.

Stewart Milne’s Witney operation has set itself a turnover target of £75m by 2010. Last year turnover reached £35m.
